Trịnh Lữ

It’s been about 10 years since I’ve known about Trịnh Lữ – a translator and a painter. My first visit to his drawing studio in 108 Quán Thánh street was with a friend who usually referred Trịnh Lữ as “Uncle Lữ”, which made me also get used to calling him that way. On that first time, I was sitting still watching him draw and keeping our interaction limited.

Recently, I actively reached out to him and ask if we could meet for a conversation, as I wanted to hear more about the stories of the two books that he has published in the past 2 years, which are “Anything you draw is Self-Portrait” and “Painter Trịnh Hữu Ngọc – A Unique Legacy of Indochinese Fine Arts”. Although our meeting that morning was not quite long, Trịnh Lữ has given me a beautiful perspective, a quick sketch of his lifelong artistic voyage of over seven decades, with all its ups and downs and many pivotal events.
