Mellow Bench is a minimal bench created by Seoul-based designer Hayoung Ki. The design leans towards a softer, ergonomic seating experience without sacrificing visual appeal. The bench’s concept epitomizes vitality and softness, brought to life through a meticulously selected blend of materials.
The seating area, crafted from waterproof FRP and coated with urethane paint, promises both comfort and longevity. This sits atop a sturdy structure fashioned from bent iron pipes and steel plates, grounding the piece with a sense of vitality and artistic flair. Moreover, the circular metal feet are integrated without the need for adhesives, embodying a firm yet beautiful footprint on the earth.
Transitioning from concept to creation involved a careful and detailed process. The initial stage saw the development of a 1:1 scale model, providing a tangible blueprint to refine the final product. The seat plate was then carved from hexahedral styrofoam, serving as a base for a plaster mold which informed the FRP structure. This was complemented by a matte urethane finish, marrying durability with aesthetics. Furthermore, the lower structure underwent meticulous crafting involving cutting, bending, and welding, enhancing both stability and visual coherence.
