St. Mary’s Cathedral

St. Mary’s Cathedral is famous for its cross-shaped structure. It is an architecture work of Pritzker-winning Japanese architect Kenzo Tange.

After the old building was destroyed in World War II, Kenzo Tange’s proposal was selected in 1960. Its origin was a wooden chapel built by French missionaries.

Its facade appears like the Cross symbol with concreted structure – a typical structure of modernist architecture in Europe and Japan at the time. The surface was covered with metal whilst its interior is imprinted with the rustic spirit thanks to the touch of natural light and shadows. The complex consists of a church, a belfry and ancillary blocks. It stands alone in an urban neighbourhood in Tokyo.

The construction was begun in 1962 and was completed in 1964.
