Traditional Bamboo and Rattan Craft Village in Vietnam

With over 400 years of history, Phu Vinh village was known as Phu Hoa Trang (meaning gifted hands).

At first, the villagers’ products were mostly household utensils such as colanders, sieves, baskets and so on. Later, thanks to their creativity, there are many others items with different designs and shapes like rattan table set, furniture (vase, curtain, portrait painting, etc..), rattan pottle..

The making of bamboo and rattan objects, regardless of whether they are big or small, must go through certain stages of collecting right materials, smoothening, drying, splitting up and smoking them or sun-drying to get the right colour. The product, after being woven, will be dipped in a glue-substance and hanged until completely dried (people usually hang the products right in front of their houses) to ensure the quality of the products. Weaving techniques of Phu Vinh’s craftsmen/women are very refine and sophisticated, namely as twisted weaving, flower weaving, interlaced braiding techniques and brocade patterns weaving.., exactly as how they would do on fabric.

Currently, Phu Vinh craft village has more than 60% of its population that makes the craft. Some family has handed down the tradition for over three generations, making the craft hereditarily. Hopefully, the journey of preserving and developing the traditional bamboo and rattan weaving here will be internally passed on.
