Fan is a minimalist chair designed by Japan-based office STUDIO MOUN. For the chair’s construction, untreated Hinoki wood from Fukuoka’s Shihozan Mountain was employed. This decision embodies the idea of local production and consumption, which is not only sustainable but also aligns with the sushi’s approach of utilizing local ingredients.
The wood’s unique hue and texture, tinged with a faint pink, were preserved to accentuate the natural aesthetics.
Consideration was given to maintenance, with a seat that can be reupholstered. The three legs were connected to the apron with double mortise-and-tenon joints, and the design took into account the attachment of the backrest and other components, resulting in a chair that maintains high strength and durability while exhibiting a graceful appearance.
The crafting of the chairs was entrusted to woodworking artist Ko Sakai, who carefully manipulated the grain to emphasize the backrest’s soft embrace. This craftsmanship ensures that the chairs will gain character and richness as they age, delighting the observer with an ever-changing and enriching visual experience.
