Roll With Me

Kazuhiro Yamanaka has designed a minimal lamp using just a sheet of A3 paper with a single electric cable. The Japanese designer continues his exploration of distinct lighting fixtures – from his collapsible moon lamp which unfolds like a photo-reflector to his flickering LED candle wrapped in paper – using the most simple materials.

This new work, playfully titled Roll With Me, takes a singular piece of paper, loosely rolls it up into a tube, and fastens it with a draping wire. A minuscule LED chip is fitted inside the wire loop, serving as the light source.

Like many of Kazuhiro Yamanaka’s previous works that utilize paper, Roll With Me uses minimal design components with a sheet of A3 paper taking center stage. Much like his previous paper LED torch, the simplicity of the designer’s concept means that any type of paper, from metallic or recycled to newspaper or copy, can be used to form the body of the lamp.

With each variation, a different effect in lighting is achieved, affecting the strength, quality, and color of the luminosity. The direction of the paper tube can also be freely adjusted, so it can be used as a functional light according to the user’s needs.
